RECAP: Four North Medford players finish with double-digit scoring efforts and the Black Tornado makes 13 steals in the Abby's Holiday Classic semifinals.UP NEXT: Tonight, North Medford vs. Sprague, 6 p.m. at North Medford High.
Two down, one to go.
Senior guard Derek Mautz had 18 points and three steals and senior post Jordan Browne-Moore recorded 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the North Medford boys basketball team in an 82-48 win over Thurston in the Abby's Holiday Classic semifinals at North Medford High on Thursday.
The Black Tornado (8-1) will play Sprague (7-3), which beat South Medford 48-33 in the other semifinal, in the championship contest at 6 tonight at North Medford High.
North pounded Glencoe 72-53 on Wednesday.
Last year, the Panthers defeated the Black Tornado in the Abby's title game.
Junior guard Oshea Bailey offered up 12 points and Mark Winans added 10 for North, which led 24-8 after the first quarter and 42-22 at halftime.
"Before the game we were saying we wanted to run this team, full-court pressure and get active, and tonight I think we did," Mautz said. "We were really active. That gives (Thurston) turnovers and it gives us layins and that gives us energy. That makes us really active."
The Black Tornado had 13 steals and the Colts committed 21 turnovers in the game.
"I thought for the most part we played 32 minutes of really sound defense and that leads to our offense," said North Medford head coach Scott Plankenhorn.
North, which used its entire roster in the rout, outrebounded Thurston 38-23.
Mautz had 11 points and Browne-Moore and Bailey 10 apiece at intermission for the Black Tornado, which sank 11 of its 16 field-goal attempts in the first period to quickly race ahead.
North didn't fade away either, sinking 10 of its 15 attempts in the third.
"There aren't too many bad things to say," Plankenhorn said. "I thought we played really well offensively when we shared the basketball and moved it and got good shots."
Chris Faust turned in five points and four assists in the Black Tornado's fourth straight win.
Cameron Cook paced Thurston (2-5) with 11 points.
